Lieutenant (JG) Solvak - Medical Officer Character Background: During childhood, Solvak learned the Vulcan flute during and calligraphy as part of the artistic education curriculum. After his childhood education and his marriage to T’Lema at age 33, he followed the Path of Healing and studied for ten years with the [Followers of T’Shen] outside Shi’Khar. Under their tutelage, Solvak learned improved telepathic methods, biofeedback mechanisms, body control, meditation techniques, healing touch, and mind protection. He also discovered his interest in alternative forms of healing outside of his own culture through discussions with other students, several of which were not Vulcan, as ‘outworlders’ were allowed by the Disciples to enhance diversity. During his last year he learned assessment of body languages of various species with the aid his diverse student circle and teacher. He then practiced healing on Vulcan for ten years at the Vulcan Medical Institute (VMI) hospital, joining his wife in serving the Vulcan populace. He became recognized for his ability to effectively treat and serve ‘outworlders’. Three years after the birth of his son Varuk, Solvak applied for the Interspecies Medical Exchange program at 56 to learn the ways other species healed and enhanced wellness as part of extended learning. For five years he worked as a doctor on the human colony world known to Terrans as Vega Colony. His time here was well spent, learning an assortment of language and communication skills alongside medical knowledge and first hand experience through contact with many other trading species. At the end of the program, he decided to enter into Starfleet Medical Academy (SFMA) as a regular, first year cadet for further training. Although a good part of his study was review, he learned neurosurgery and augmented his knowledge base of current technologies and medical procedures. He learned what was widely and currently available in the Federation system as well as how Star Fleet Medical trained their cadets compared to his past training. His time was largely unremarkable for a Vulcan, save for what he calls a “cultural misunderstanding” that led to his placing third in the annual ping-pong championship in his graduating year. Upon graduation at age 65, he was posted to his first vessel, an Oberth class scout ship USS Copernicus II. During its five-year mission, he served as a Nurse while the vessel explored stars and planets in the Ficus sector. At the end of the five-year mission, Solvak returned briefly to Vulcan for two years. He then relocated back to Vega Colony, working as Head Nurse for four years at the Colony medical facility before returning to Vulcan. During his two years on Vulcan, he received specialized training and was being scrutinized by SFI. He then spent one year at SFMA, aiding medical cadets during training scenarios. He was then officially transferred back to active duty, heading back out to Vega Colony aboard a small transport ship, the USS Remalda. Everything went as planned. What was meant to appear to be a 12.66 day 'hop' between Earth and Vega IX turned out to more closely approximate another medical scenario. Like so many space 'disasters,' this one involved faulty equipment. The apparent culprits: a hackneyed power system and out of date set of fail-safes. Being medical personnel, he was one of the last to take a pod. Answering the all-hands evacuation measures on board, Solvak's escape pod was never found. His Starfleet record currently has him listed as MIA--neither his pod nor his person were recovered during the following investigation. His last known position is listed as the Vega System. Extended Family/Relatives: Solvak is the youngest son coming from a very large family, most of whom are or were healers, including his brothers and sister, mother, and grandfather (mother’s side). Wife: T’Lema, currently residing on Vulcan in the family home in Raal. Works at VMI as a Doctor specializing in pediatrics and obstetrics. T’Lema’s family work in the creation of traditional handmade fabrics and Vulcan attire. They also trade these same goods and teach classes to keep the art alive. T’Lema is the only member of her immediate family to choose the healer’s path. Child: Varuk, male, age 16. Current occupation: student, interests include warp sciences and engineering. Father: Sakyr works for Vulcan Space Central and is currently planning retirement to pursue a political or advisory position as an occupation for the last years of his life. Mother: T’Rasa works for Vulcan Medical Directorate and currently holds a seat on the Vulcan Physicians’ Counsel. T’Rasa worked for many years as a Doctor at VMI as well as conducted research and treatment for Bendii syndrome. Siblings: Two older brothers: Vereth is first born, married to T’Lim with a daugher T’Pyra. Stev is second eldest, married to T’Mem with a daughter T’Hira. One younger sister, T’Jari, married to Verask with no children. Previous Starfleet Record: Entered Starfleet Medical Academy (SFMA) and fulfilled four years of training, specializing in Xenobiology and Xenosurgery. Served as a Nurse on board The Copernicus II for five years after graduation. Special Skills/Hobbies: Placed third in SFMA’s ping-pong club championship in his graduating year; seen ‘playing’ kal-toh and other strategy games with crewmembers in 10-F. Plays the Vulcan flute and brushes Vulcan ‘calligraphy,’ generally both private endeavors. Skilled in Xenosurgery, neurosurgery, and Vulcan healing arts. Personality/General Attitude/Quirks: Personality: Quiet and mild disposition; vocal tone generally warm, soft, and well modulated. He appears to profess absolutely no ambition, moving through different levels or methods of training slowly, meticulously, and thoroughly. He performs his various duties as close to perfection and efficiency as he is able, which he sees as the duty to his path and accorded position of service to society. He believes he is where he is most needed at all times. General Attitude: Prefers to think of himself as a generalist practitioner and not a specialist, due to his variety of knowledge sources and personal curiosity. Endeavors to learn new ways in which cultures heal one another and how best to use his skills to help the healing of others. Personal Ethics: Vulcan equivalent of deontological pacifism. Belief system: Surakian logic. Quirks: ‘preference’ for mint tea and gespar rolls; follows a strictly vegetarian diet. ‘Morning’ routine includes meditation and exercises. Body Language: In general, he has the typical synchronous, efficient movements and gait of most Vulcans. When in ‘at ease’ posture, he interlaces his fingers with left thumb on top at abdomen level. Occasionally taps the space between his brows if he is researching, typing, thinking, evaluating, or deciding on complex but abstract outcomes. During treatment, his hands become a steady tool under full control, as befitting a medical professional. Often leans very slightly forward and maintains stillness when listening to another standing person, patiently waiting for them to have their full say in silence with full eye contact (as culturally or species-appropriate). Normal ‘comfort’ zone: Stands slightly further back than most humans in order to read their body language. |
