1st Lieutenant (JG) Keesmaat (Kees) Vacan’cil Mira’ni - Air Group Commander

Keesmaat hatched in 2345 on board the Mira’ni flagship Mirowa. Primary education having been done telepathically while in the birthing pod, Kees immediately entered her secondary education, consisting mostly of acclimating to life outside the pod and some basic engineering skills.

In 2350 Kees began her apprenticeship as a pilot and serving as a fighter/scout escort for Clan Mira’ni’s ragtag fleet of about thirty major ships. During her service, she was involved in skirmishes with Andorians, Nausicans, and Ferengi. In 2357, while scouting for salvage after a battle in the Galen border conflict between the Federation and the Talarians, she rescued Captain Christine Young and the crew of the USS Marie Antoinette which had been ambushed and crippled and was losing life support. Keesmaat’s piloting skills and bravery in getting the Federation personnel to the safety of the Rowa’ni fleet when the Talarians reappeared. Captain Young suggested that Kees should apply to Starfleet Academy, as she was already a phenomenal pilot and she could only get better training on the state of the art Starfleet fighters.

Keesmaat found the idea of Starfleet intriguing, but there were some problems. As a non-citizen, she would need a sponsorship, which Captain Young was only too happy to provide the young Rowa’ni. But it took a couple more years to straighten out Keesmaat’s background check due to the fact that her cousin was a known Rowa’ni nationalist cell leader implicated in terrorist attacks on Andoria.

Finally, in 2360 Keesmaat got into Starfleet Academy. Captain Young immediately arranged for her to get drafted into Nova Squadron, the Academy’s elite fighter unit that often performed for visiting dignitaries.

Graduating in 2364, Keesmaat had a distinguished service record during many of the Federations recent conflicts, including Wolf 359 (in which her Captain credited the survival of the Wellington to her skills), the Romulan blockade during the Klingon Civil War, missions against the Maquis, service in the Klingon/Federation war and against the Borg in Sector 001. She did miss much of the Dominion War, however. She was, however, passed over many times for promotion.

After the Dominion War, Keesmaat’s record was marred. She was assigned to Engineering on the Victory, which she didn’t mind, but she longed for a helm position again. Conflict with her Andorian Chief Engineer led to a drunken brawl in the lounge over comments made about Kees’ race.

Forced reassignment to the engineering department on the Phoenix brought a better environment and a promotion. Finally, Keesmaat’s patron, Captain Christine Young, now commanding the Ghandi, sought Kees out for an opening as her Chief Helm Officer.

The Ghandi was recently destroyed in a skirmish with the Tholians. After a period of leave, Keesmaat became the commander of a small fighter squadron on the Spartan, where she flew experimental fighters and served with distinction.

Recently Keesmaat was approached by Starfleet Intelligence to report to the USS Renaissance.
