Lieutenant (JG) Derna Coy - Chief Communications Officer Distinctive features: Bajoran nose ridges; slightly pointed brows, very slightly pointed ear pinae that became more pronounced after puberty. Her nictitating membranes (transparent inner eyelids) were noticable from infancy, as was the fact that her heart bifurcated on the vertical axis (rather than the horizontal like Bajorans) and was located on the right side of her torso… all clear indications that she was not solely Bajoran. Later genetic testing carried out by the Cardassians confirmed that she was a Vulcan-Bajoran hybrid.Personality/General Attitude/Quirks: vegetarian; indulges in old human custom of smoking cigars and drinking brandy; like most Vulcans, she is immune to effects of alcohol but gets inebriated and sexually unihibited on chocolate. Her hybrid make-up and experiences have also left her with a more ironic and sardonic outlook on life than a strictly logical one. Previous Starfleet Record : classified Special Skills: non-contact telepath; the ability to mind-meld with eye contact alone Hobbies: violin, chess, studying the meditative practices of various species Character Background: She was left as a toddler in a Bajoran orphanage by a woman presumed to be her mother. The woman refused to give her name and was never heard from again. The girl child answered to the name Coy, and she was surnamed Derna, after the Bajoran 4th moon that was in ascendancy the night of her arrival. Coy was raised in The Way of the Prophets and, as a young girl, sought to receive holy orders. But when Cardassia annexed Bajor, Vulcan authorities made the unique request that the 22 year old young woman be treated as a Vulcan and sent 'home'. Having a hard time adapting to life on Vulcan, Coy entered the Starfleet Academy at the first opportunity and left for Earth. Therefore, never having experienced the struggles of her Bajoran compatriots during the Occupation, never fully assimilating to Vulcan life, and being heavily influenced by Human ways while training in Starfleet, Derna Coy lives as a product of 3 cultures that are often at odds. She is perpetually on the move, living in no single world, no people to fully call her own, nowhere to truly call home. Extended Family/Relatives: unknown |
