Character Background:
Rayne graduated from Starfleet academy with a specialization in Command procedures. He was assigned to the USS Ponderosa and was deployed to the front lines as tensions between the Dominion and the Federation grew to an all time high.

The Ponderosa was crippled in an ambush by Dominion forces. An explosion on the bridge left young Rayne Colt as the only surviving member of the bridge crew. Instead of trying to fight with the crippled ship, he surrendered the ship so the crew would have a chance to live. Many of the other surviving crew who found this out were gravely upset, feeling that Rayne had betrayed the federation and them by his act.

While the crew had survived, it would have been just as well if they had died. As a Prisoner of War, Rayne Colt was sent to Ulmuga, one of the larger construction facilities on the Dominion side. At first Rayne kept mostly quiet and to himself, still wondering if he had made the right choice in surrendering. After witnessing all the brutality to his fellow prisoners, he decided to take a chance. With nothing to lose, Rayne began stealing bits and pieces of technology from the Cardassian guards.

Over time he was able to construct a working transmitter and began transmitting as much information as he could back to the federation. Soon some other prisoners learned of this and helped him keep the transmitter hidden as well as getting pieces when something on it broke.

Within two years, Rayne’s group of prisoners had gone from simply transmitting what they heard to actively finding out information as well as several covert sabotage missions. By the end of the war, Rayne’s group had been indirectly responsible for numerous victories for the federation.

When the federation finally made it through to Umuga, Rayne lead the revolt which crippled the defences from the inside. The fight was over quickly with not a single causality to the federation or the prisoners.

Rayne was awarded and called a hero of the war. He was debriefed by Starfleet and then took a year to go home and see his family again before returning to active duty.

Upon his return, his superiors offered to allow him to jump several ranks to Commander because of his extraordinary accomplishments during the war. Rayne turned the offer down stating that if he was going to get the rank, he would get it on his own terms and in his own time.

Six years later he achieved the rank and was happy to have gotten it on his own and through the proper procedure. The biggest reason for wanting to wait was that he felt that he didn’t know enough of the procedures to make the jump. He had been told he was a natural leader, but he felt that was only part of the puzzle. He was determined that when he became Captain and received his own command, it would be through a lifetime of hard work and achievement, not through one moment of glory.
